OSHF is thrilled to be partnering with the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (HALO) to offer special full-day workshops that will introduce practitioners to the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (CAPL).  
Sessions are taking place across Ontario to increase awareness and improve understanding of physical literacy, as well as provide comprehensive hands-on training in physical literacy evaluation.  Attendees will be guided through novel and dynamic protocols that will test their own movement skills and ultimately enhance the delivery of child and youth activity programming.

About HALO

The Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (HALO) was established in 2007 by the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in response to the escalating obesity crisis and increasing complexity of related co-morbidities. Today the HALO team consists of 16 staff including 6 researchers, a childhood obesity clinical team (Centre for Healthy Active Living), 12 graduate students, and many community volunteers. Since its inception, HALO has received over $8.4 million in research funding, produced more than 342 peer-reviewed publications, has given more than 696 scholarly presentations locally, nationally and internationally, and secured more than 1 billion media impressions.

About the Physical Literacy Days

With the CAPL as its basis, the events will provide professional tools and training to assess physical literacy in children 8 to 12 years of age, and correspondingly improve the development and delivery of active leisure and sport programming.  Five distinct workshops make up the day: 

Physical Literacy Assessment 101
The goal of this session is to provide attendees with an overview of physical literacy and introduce the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (CAPL). Attendees will be given a brief history of how the CAPL was developed and learn why it is a valid and reliable assessment tool. Attendees will also learn the benefits of using the CAPL, including how assessment results can enhance program delivery.

A Practitioner’s Guide to Doing the CAPL
During this interactive session, attendees will be provided with an in-depth description of the CAPL domains (Daily behaviour, Physical Competence, Knowledge and Understanding, and Motivation and Confidence) and learn how to administer each of the CAPL protocols. Attendees will learn the ins and outs of how the CAPL can easily integrate into their existing programs.

The Obstacle Course Advanced Skill Development
One of the CAPL protocols used within the Physical Competence domain is an obstacle course that assesses a child’s fundamental, complex and combined movement skills. This session takes a hands-on approach to teach attendees how to administer, score and interpret the CAPL obstacle course.

What Do My Physical Literacy Assessment Results Mean?
It is important for leaders, parents, and children to be able to interpret the results of the CAPL assessment. Attendees will be taken through the CAPL website step-by-step and learn how to calculate and summarize assessment results. After this session, attendees will understand what the CAPL assessment results mean for the child and program provision.

Putting Physical Literacy within REACH (Recreation, Education, Allied health, Coaching, Healthcare)
Sometimes it may be easier to screen children for physical literacy deficits and only use the CAPL with those who are struggling on their physical literacy journey. During this interactive session, attendees will learn how to administer quick and easy physical literacy screening tasks that, in less than five minutes, can enable program leaders to identify children who require extra attention in developing their physical literacy skills.

Event Day Information

Participant sign-in for all dates/locations opens at 9:00am with the first workshop beginning at 9:30.  A one-hour break will be scheduled around noon.  Session venues are located within walking distance of healthy lunch options and participants are also encouraged to "brown bag it" by bringing their own meals and snacks.  The day will wrap up at 3:30pm following a short question & answer period.


Registrations are refundable less a $15 administration fee.  Cancellation requests will be accepted in writing until 7 days prior to a participant's selected workshop.  No refunds are available following the cut-off date.
